   Perhaps the first question that comes to mind when someone is introduced to numerology is how does it work? The next question is usually what are my numbers? There are four primary numbers that numerologists use when doing the basic natal chart.

   The most common starting point for numerological interpretation starts by taking the full name at birth and breaking it down into three divisions. Along with the person’s name, the date of birth is given initial consideration. These four combinations of numbers form the matrix of the primary numerology chart.

   Every author of numerology has his/her own terminology and procedure for interpreting the meaning of the name. All of them work with the vowels separately, the consonants separately, and the two combined. Different authors use different terminologies once they have separated the letters into these three groupings. Sometimes new students become confused by these differences in terminology.

    Because of my background in psychology and as a therapist, I chose to introduce an entirely new nomenclature to the interpretation of numbers. For the interpretation of the name I use the personality number (consonants), the soul number (vowels) and the number of the integrated self (total name).

 

The Consonants (Personality Number)

 

  When the term "personality" is mentioned in this volume, I am referring to the little self which each of us uses for manifesting in this life sojourn. The personality is composed from the synthesis of activity expressed through the vehicles of the lower self: physical, etheric, astral (emotional), and mental (intellectual) bodies.

    The personality number is a focal point through which you express yourself in the daily world of events. The personality number indicates the primary lessons the individual is focusing upon during this life. It is the exterior part of your behavior most readily seen in the exchanges of everyday life. It gives insight into our potential, shortcomings, strengths and abilities. It does not attempt to describe the entire personality. Rather, it indicates the primary lessons and attributes of self you have chosen to concentrate upon in this lifetime. The personality number is similar to the rising sign in astrology. It reveals how you function socially and reveals much about your exterior behavior.

  The personality number is derived from the totaling of numbers from consonants in the full name at birth. Each of those separate numbers is present and influences the total. In a sense it is similar to your astrology chart; your sun sign may be one sign while the moon sign is different. Each one is quite important when interpreting the chart. However, all the energies of the solar system (planetary and zodiacal) are present. The energy flows through focal points, such as sun sign, moon sign, or the planets according to their placement and angle of relationship.

  In numerology many numbers are present, and each one should be considered. However, to start with we study the focal points of concentrated vibrational intensity. Numbers are static symbols of the angles and degrees of consciousness, and act similar to switching stations of energy by directing and transferring different rays of subtle energies throughout all creation. They could be seen at times as an analogy to the on and off variables that operate within the computer processor.

live. Once you have become familiarized with the workings of numerology it is easy

to see that there are many similarities between the personality number and the life

number.

When it seems to be the right moment for you, you might want to take a look.

at the five life number some time to get a different perspective about a similar set of

circumstances.  

 

 

The Vowels (Soul Number)

 

  The soul is the ongoing inner part of our being which holds the memory of all of our life journeys. That may include upon other planets and dimensions as well as here on earth. The soul seeks further evolution through the vehicles of the personality by entering into the physical body. It strives for balance and completion of earth experience, so that it may evolve into yet other dimensions or planetary systems of evolution. The soul is neither the higher self nor the spark of our divinity. The soul is the accumulation of experience and is learning the lessons of evolution just as the personality is learning is learning from this life time.

    The soul number reveals the particular vibration the soul stresses through the personality in this lifetime. It is the energy pattern that the soul (in conjunction with Higher Self) foresees as most appropriate for accomplishing the determined growth lessons during this lifetime. The soul possesses knowledge of all the vibrations, yet focuses its fund of wisdom to accelerate this vibrational pattern for the benefit of its progression.

    The soul is not the higher self or divine spark. It is the accumulation of experience through numerous personalities over eons of evolution. The soul is also learning and adding to the pool of experience. The soul number gives a clue as to the primary lessons and energies it has chosen to accomplish. It tells us what is going on inside the deeper dimensions of the individual. For most of us at this time in evolution the soul purpose is not seen clearly because it is distorted passing through the ego and dysfunctions of the human personality. As we go about cleansing and transforming the personality, the soul energy becomes more pure and refined.

 

The Complete Name (Integrated Self)

 

    The number of the integrated self indicates what personal growth the individual aspires to attain during this lifetime.  Few people throughout history have reached their full growth potential for enlightened living. Enlightenment is a manifestation of the individualized expression of higher Self. This results when the soul and personally function together in full harmony. The influence of the integrated self number remains largely dormant until a high degree of integration is reached. Its expression projects outward through the personality in distorted fashion until the individual has attained an enhanced level of cleansing leading to the integration of personality and soul. Until an individual reaches a relatively healthy integration, the behavior pattern of this number would be more similar to that of the personality number. 

     When interpreting a chart, always remember there is much more than just reading different sections of the book for each numerical description. The full chart should be intuitively linked after an examination of the parts. Then you can look at the parts again with a better grasp and appreciation of all therein. In working with this chapter particularly, remember that the soul number comes through the personality. The integrated self qualities also are manifesting through the personality and soul. Thus, it can be distorted by ego and negative personality traits.

    As human beings we all have certain problems, neurosis, blocks, and dysfunctional patterns. Most people who are attracted into the self-awareness movement are working consciously to recognize and release negative dysfunctional behavior. As the personality becomes relatively clear and healthy, the soul can manifest through it more cleanly. Then the individual reaches toward a state of integration and consistent well-being.

 

The Date of Birth (Life Path-Life Number)

 

  The date of birth (month, day, and year) provides one of the four most significant calculations while interpreting the natal chart. From this number you can determine the life number. The life number yields insight into the reoccurring lessons the individual will attract into his/her life experience. This number provides insight as to how that person will likely react to the circumstances life offers.

    The life number provides a clue as to what fate has in store. It reveals to us the particular lessons that will most likely be repeated until they are learned and integrated into the soul memory. Proper utilization of numerological information can provide guidelines and help the individual adjust more easily to the lessons of life.

     If you take conscious responsibility for your potential, you can better understand yourself and considerably accelerate the learning curve of life. With understanding comes the foundation upon which effective actions are based. Right action releases us from the wheel of karma and rebirth, furthering the evolution of soul. We can continue our journey onto higher spirals and planes of existence.

     It is my personal belief that the date of birth is determined by the soul (and higher self) of the incoming child. Every mother has the experience of knowing that when the child is ready, birth occurs. It seems only proper that the soul does the choosing because the life number indicates the type of opportunities, challenges, and destiny that life experience will bring to assist experiential evolution. It is not necessary for the reader to accept this belief in order to appreciate the meaning of numbers. Whatever the process of selection, it is the birth date that does give definition to the life pattern. How to calculate your own numbers will be answered at this time.

  The procedure for deriving each of the numerical values of the name starts with knowing which number corresponds to each letter of the name. Below is a reference list of these correspondences.

    To start, write down your full name at birth (first, middle [one or more], and last). If there is a Jr., or the 3rd or the 4th, you will find clarification for their interpretation later in this chapter.

   The usual rule of thumb is to use the name on the birth certificate. There can be some exceptions.  If a mistake was made on the birth certificate and corrected immediately, I usually go with the corrected name. In cases of adoption, if there was a name established prior to the adopted name, I usually go with the original name.

     The name at birth is similar to the natal chart in astrology. It is in effect your entire life.  As you later change names (for marriage, career, nicknames, stage names, etc.) these can be given consideration for the vibrational change they represent. These changes become like an overlay which stimulates a new vibration that enables you to see your real name from a different perspective. However, the natal influence remains as an underlying foundation of your consciousness. You will find a much more thorough explanation about name changes in chapter 6.

  Once you have the name written, you place the appropriate number under each letter using the above chart as a guideline. You then add across the line getting a total number for the full name. This is called the pure number. Once you have a total, it is reduced to a single digit by simple addition. This number is called the number of the Integrated Self (for further clarification read further into this chapter)

    Next, on another line, place a number under the vowels only (A, E, I, O, U and Y). Then add across and get a total for the vowels of the full name. The total is the pure number. Now reduce it to a single digit by simple addition. This is the Soul Number. (Author’s Note) There is debate among some numerologists regarding the use of Y as a vowel or consonant. I struggled with the issue for some time in my early practice. After having interpreted tens of thousands of charts and exchanging consultation with other intuitive professional practitioners, I have come to the conclusion that the Y is always considered a vowel.

    Finally, on another line, place the numbers under each of the consonants only. The number of the consonants is your Personality Number. Then you add them across until you get a total. The total is the pure number. Reduce it to a single digit by simple addition.

    Below is an example chart to help give you assistance:

    Here is another example with master numbers:

     The general rule of thumb when adding is not to reduce master numbers.

     In the above name some practitioners might indicate Robert Store’s IS number 2 (11) because it is not the pure number. The pure number is 56, which is then reduced and becomes an 11. I have labeled it as an 11 (2) because it is now an 11 before it is reduced to a 2.

 For the soul number we have 22(4) which indicates it is first of all a pure 22 and yet it is a 4. We say this is a 22(4), or a 2(11).  When a number is in parenthesis ( ) it can also denote a potential master number in the system that some numerologists use.

  In my practice I sometimes do not reduce the number 10 and consider similar to a master number. You may find me doing that somewhere is this volume.

 

    Here is a little helpful hint to the beginner. Make a quick examination to be sure that the sum of the vowels and the sum of the consonants add up to the total of the whole name.  It is just a quick check to catch possible errors in your addition.

 

What About Jr. (Junior) and Other Additions?

 

    There has been a long time question in numerology about what to do with Junior and other additions. Those who practiced numerology for years have questioned, discussed and debated this dilemma. There seemed to be no clear answer and or consensual agreement. Finally someone said, “Why don’t we just ignore it?” In essence, that is what happened. 

  The general rule of thumb for interpretation is to start with the full name at birth: that is, the full name on the birth certificate. Junior is part of the name and should be included. Then the question arises how do you calculate its numerical value? That is why many numerologists choose to ignore it, because they don’t know what to do with it? Do you put Jr. as some numerologists have done? Then you would give the J a 1 value and the r a 9 value in the chart construction. What many beginners and novice numerologists fail to understand is that numerology comes from the sound of the name. In this case the name is junior, not J. r. For that reason I fully acknowledge the name in chart interpretation. Robert Jones Jr. would be written Robert Jones Junior.

  There is some debate that additions like the 3rd, the 4th etc. are a title rather than a name and are not to be considered. Some novice practitioners who wanted to include these would put a 3 for the third or a 4 for the fourth. The general rule of interpretation says that you include the full name on the birth certificate. I was a federal investigator in my earlier years and worked with hundreds of birth certificates. I never saw one that had a box for the name and another box for any title. A birth certificate asks for the name of the child. A name would be listed as John Doe 3rd, Boy Blue 4th. Many novice practitioners do not realize that numerology is based upon the sound of the name, which would be written out as John Doe The Third, or Boy Blue The Fourth with the appropriate letters placed under these names accordingly.

 

 

Working With Foreign Names

 

   Upon occasion, the student of numerology may be requested to construct a chart for someone born in another country where the name was in the native language. This can create some perplexities for the aspiring numerologist, considering texts written in our country deal with only the English alphabet.

   To construct a natal chart in the native language set up the chart in the native alphabet using the numbering system one to nine. The first letter or character will be given a value of one, the next two, and so on, through the number nine. When you come to the tenth letter you will go back to number one just as calculating in our alphabet. With oriental characters and other languages this transition is not easy to perform. This author and other practitioners are exploring efficient and accurate methods of converting for these different cultures.

    Many cultures have an alphabet that does not lend itself easily to the numbering of one to nine. Oriental, Arabic and other cultures have their own systems of determining numerical value. In such situations one choice is to do the chart in the numerical system of that culture. The Pythagorean numerologist may also want to apply that method by placing values under letters or characters as described in the earlier paragraph above.

    The next alternative is to do the chart using the anglicized name given at immigration, or that the person is using. In that case you are working with the numbers identified as the accomplished you, outer you and inner you mentioned in section of this chapter 6 about the change of name. This will not provide the depth and nuance of the natal chart, but it can still be of assistance in dealing with the vibrational lessons of the moment.

 

Calculating the Life Number

 

  To calculate the life number you take the month and day and then the year of birth and add them together similarly to doing your name. Following are two examples:

 

  With the birth date of June 14 1982 (6 14 1982) you simply add the numbers across to get the pure number.

 

6+1+4+1+9+8+2=31 =3+1 =4

 

  As you will notice the total number is reduced to a single digit. The exception to this being with master numbers as described above with the explanation for doing the numbers of the name. Next is a good example of a master number.

 

  December 11, 1934 would be 12 11 1934=1+2+1+1+1+9+3+4=22 =22(4)

 

  Some practitioners calculate in other manners.  For example, they would first add 1+2 and get 3. Then they would go to the day which is an 11 and may or may not consider that a 2 (depending upon their position about master numbers). Finally they would add 1+9+3+4=8. In this instance 3+11+8=22(4), so the results are the same.  Here’s a tricky one 11 22 1984.  The pure number would be

 

1+1+2+2+1+9+8+4=28=10=1+0=1.

 

The master number calculation would be

 

11+22+22 (1+9+8+4=22+) =55=10=1.

 

     As previously mentioned, in my practice I sometimes do not reduce the number 10 and consider similar to a master number. You may find me doing that somewhere is this volume.

 

  (Author’s Note!)  You will notice that there are interpretations presented in this book for life numbers and personal years that go all the way through the master numbers to 99. This has been done even though by calculating the pure number the highest possible master number would be 44. By following the method above the highest possible master number would be 55.

 

  There are some practitioners who calculate the numbers breaking down the four numbers in the year of birth into pairs for detailed analysis. For example,

 

  6 15 1945 would be 6+6+1+9=22(4)  or even   3 14 1978=3+5+10+15=33(6)

 

  Another example 1 1 1866=1+1+9=66=77(5)

 

  If you play with such calculations, virtually anyone can have a master number! This is kind of fuzzy logic, but in a sense one can argue that a master number is there in potential. If an individual chooses to honor this method of logic, then it can be said the individual has the potential to bring out the master number into manifestation. I have provided interpretations for those who might like to follow that line of reasoning.

 

What Does it Mean if I have the same Numbers Repeat?

 

   Frequently there will be the repetition of numbers when considering the Big Four calculations; i. e. a 4 life number and 4 soul number. When it occurs that there is a repeat of numbers, this usually means that you have chosen to place emphasis upon learning a particular lesson during this life time.

   Often times there will be a karmic number missing and one of the Big Four numbers will be the same as the missing number. In some instances there have been three missing karmic numbers in a chart and those three numbers were the same as the soul, personality and life number. It such an instance the person has chosen to really try and get things done right during this life experience. It also serves as a reminder of how the balance and flow of cycles and numbers so marvelously weaves its way through the universal and personal dance of life.
