CHAPTER 9

STRESS NUMBERS

     Stress numbers were first introduced to numerology by this author in a previous publication. The stress number serves to accentuate differences between two numbers. It helps to define the tension between the vibrational qualities of the numbers being compared. Stress numbers are like points of tension or opposition which need to be overcome before the two numbers of comparison can best function harmoniously together.

    As implied by the use of the term stress number, they are more pronounced when our life is under stress. Under such pressure the tendency is to manifest more of our unconscious mannerism rather than our best behavior. Most of us, of course, do not like to see that part of our behavior. They are presented to help bring negative unconscious traits into light.  Once you recognize these, you have a choice to resolve them. Gone unacknowledged, you remain a victim of your negative existence.

    The stress numbers have been divided into two groupings: the intrapersonal stress numbers and the interpersonal. The intrapersonal number is calculated by subtracting the smaller of two primary numbers from the larger of the two. In this instance, primary number refers to the personality, soul, integrated self, or life number. When subtracting, all the numbers should be reduced to a single digit. First, compute the difference between the personality (P) and soul (S); then between the personality and integrated self (IS); finally between the soul and integrated self.

     From this set of calculations, you will have three stress numbers (unless two of the primaries are the same). Finally, compute the difference between the life number (LN) and personality number; then life number and soul; and then life number and integrated self. You will then have a second set of calculations composed of three additional stress numbers, giving a total of six stress numbers.

   Let us say your IS=8, S = 5, P = 3, and LN = 6. The stress numbers would be computed as follows:

    Difference between    S and  P, or  5 - 3=2  Stress Number

    Difference between   IS and  P, or  8 - 3=5  Stress Number

    Difference between   IS and  S, or  8 - 5=3  Stress Number

    Difference between  LN and  P, or  6 - 3=3  Stress Number

    Difference between  LN and  S, or  6 - 5=1  Stress Number

    Difference between  LN and IS, or  8 - 6=2  Stress Number

      You will note, the combinations that provide the stress numbers are also purposely written out. Now refer to these numbers by combinations using the intrapersonal description on the following pages. The combinations are arranged in numerical order purely for purposes of systematic arrangement.

     Interpersonal stress numbers are computed by subtracting the difference between the primary numbers in each chart. That is, when comparing charts, the major stress number is the difference between the personality numbers of both charts, the integrated self, and the life numbers. An example is given below:

   CHART A                                   CHART B

    P=4                                              P=2               4 - 2=2  Stress  Number

    S=7                                              S=1               7 - 1=6  Stress  Number

   IS=2(11)                                      IS=3               3 - 2=1  Stress  Number

      A further use for stress numbers when assessing compatibilities between charts is to compute the difference between the numbers on the planes of expression: Physical, Emotional, Mental, and Intuitive. If a further comparison is desired, you can subtract the difference between the personality number of one chart and the life or soul number in another. You may also devise effective ways of your own for using these stress combinations.

     The intrapersonal stress numbers provide a method of examining potential crosscurrents within the individual's psychological make-up. Stress numbers help to pinpoint likely subconscious tensions between the needs and actions of the personality, soul, and higher self. By consciously recognizing these stress areas the combination can be then transmuted into a cooperative dynamic flow between the three fold structure of consciousness:  personality, soul, and higher self.

     The interpersonal stress numbers are indicative of the differences between the two charts that should be understood for reaching greater compatibility and cooperative blending of the two vibrational qualities of the involved primary numbers. They point out where resistance will occur between two people, but they can also reveal the easiest avenue for working harmoniously.

     As mentioned earlier, the descriptive paragraphs emphasize the subconscious and karmic traits. You will think of wholly new ways to apply the stress numbers because this new area of interpretation will require much further investigation and application. My desire is to get subconscious conflicts recognized and resolved for more effective living. Therefore, the emphasis from now on is upon the negative side of the stress numbers.

    The interpersonal stress numbers are particularly useful  for  understanding  marriage,  parent-child,  employee-employer, or other relationships. Used wisely, it provides insight to overcome the difference that allows the people involved to form a more complete union.

    The question may have arisen in your mind about the meaning of two numbers in the chart being the same, i.e. a number two soul number and a two personality number. Or two people's charts, each having the same life number that provides no stress number. We have already discussed many times how each number has an assertive, passive, and a harmonious quality. When two exact numbers are compared, the possibility of stress arises from the increased likelihood of going to extremes.

    When two people have the same numbers, it is similar to people having the same sun signs or similar aspects in the astrology chart. They may fail to see the imbalance in their mutual life and commit excesses or omissions blindly together. Another possibility is that when one fails to recognize a negative within himself, it is very easy to overemphasize and pick on that idiosyncrasy of the spouse or partner. On the other hand, the ideal situation would be that when one partner moves too far out of balance in one direction, the other partner may be going the opposite way, and this cycle could work to teach both the lesson of harmony and mutual growth.

    When you read the descriptions pertaining to the interpersonal stress numbers, it may appear that in certain instances, the role described will seem more applicable to the other individual involved. Just remember, we choose the opposite sometimes to learn balance, so roles can often seem reversed. That could indicate where balance is necessary.

                                   The descriptions for the interpersonal stress numbers are admittedly quite general.

                              They are intended as guidelines to help you establish your own concepts. The dynamics

                              of the stress between a 5-9 soul combination would differ from a 5-9 personality

 combination, as well as from the 5-9 life number combination. The reader should use intuitive wisdom and common sense of these different levels of interpretation when evaluating the stress numbers.

INTRAPERSONAL STRESS NUMBERS

COMBINATIONS WITH NUMBER ONE

   1-2--STRESS NUMBER (1). There is conflict between assertiveness of will and fear of social criticism. You are struggling within yourself to find your own self-convictions. In competition or under stress, you are argumentative and critical. You must outfox, outwit or outperform others.  A karmic pattern of working out a tendency toward gossip or scandalous accusations may return, directed toward you in this life. You want to dominate relationships, and you find conflict with an intensely self-willed spouse, relatives, or friends. You may find it difficult to establish direction and conviction, particularly until your early thirties. It is likely you were raised in a dogmatic and critical, religious, or socially active family that left you caught between strong personal ambitions and indoctrinated conscience. Common addictions include socializing, entertainment, pets, relationships, drugs, collecting, chocolates and smoking among many.

   1-9—STRESS NUMBER (8). There is a pull between extreme opposite polarities. Self-will is pitted against altruistic needs to serve the mass consciousness. You seek attention to build ego. There is a likelihood of dissension with authority. You are cynical toward successful leaders and covet influence. You use self-deception and unscrupulous means of tricking the public. In personal relationships you are opportunistic and exploitive. You take advantage of others' dreams and idealism to attain your own ends. You are indifferent to the plight of the poor and helpless. Until a proper perspective is placed upon wealth, you will likely experience financial reversals. You can offset the negative here by altruistic application of your individuality to help others. But it will take rigorous effort. Common addictions include hobbies, pets, money, chocolate, sugar, food, institutions, religious fanaticism and entertainment.

COMBINATIONS WITH NUMBER TWO

   2-3—STRESS NUMBER (1). With this stress pattern, you tend to be torn between self-criticism and creative potential. There is a fear your ideas will not be accepted by the public. You need to strengthen your self-confidence and will. You likely express a fake sense of pride to mask the self-doubt indicated. You are plagued with sensitivity, apprehension, and worry over minute details and inconsequential trivia. You lack the male drive to initiate positive action. Your passive-aggressive nature is disguised beneath a kind of confused wishy-washy easy going persona.   Do you receive much criticism from coworkers? You must use your own strength of will to discern what is significant to your life; then go after it, regardless of outside criticism. Common addictions include shopping, chocolate, alcohol, sugar, sex, relationships, food, entertainment and socializing.

COMBINATIONS WITH NUMBER EIGHT

   8-9—STRESS NUMBER (1). Past misuse of will puts you in a position of choosing between selfish aspiration for power and an opportunity of selfless service for mankind. There is much self-control and desire to lead and influence people. It is very easy for you to arrange other peoples' lives and tell what is best for them. You did it in other lives, and maybe you will let go this time and do a better job with your own life. You could well be a great savior to mankind or a megalomaniac dictator. You build you low self-esteem by ridiculing others. Use your originality and determination to build a better you. The world will automatically benefit from your contribution. You have a reserved and gruff exterior and excellent mind. Beneath this is a stubborn determination that helps you overcome obstacles and attain your goal. Just be careful not to trample others on your way. Common addictions are speed-danger, movies, gambling, sex, alcohol, money, power, sports and work.

INTERPERSONAL STRESS NUMBERS

COMBINATIONS WITH NUMBER THREE

   3-4—STRESS NUMBER (1). A distinctly different lifestyle and attitude challenge the will aspect in both parties of this combination. The three misconstrues the four's seriousness, and the four is irritated by the whimsical three. The three may depend upon the four for support, but the four takes work so seriously that he fails to give emotional strength. The four needs to learn to loosen up and enjoy life more spontaneously, but cannot grasp the spontaneity and illogical whims of the three. A significant difference in goals is likely. The four seeks a boost to will, but the three has so many distractions that it is difficult to sustain support. The three seeks strength of will, but the four's discipline and serious outlook are difficult to accept. Both parties must be willing to recognize the fundamental individuality and will in the other. Together, this combination blends spontaneity with discipline.

   3-9—STRESS NUMBER (6). This emotionally fluctuating combination must seek a realistic attitude toward responsibility. The three relies upon the nine's idealism and faith, while the nine expects the three to take care of business. The three's worry tendency upsets the natural idealism and optimism of the nine; the nine's detachment creates an emotional frustration for the three. The three's varied interests and diversions antagonize the nine, who would like more personal attention. On the other hand, the nine can get caught up in ideals and causes, becoming quite indifferent to the personal needs of the three. Both parties must strive for mature solutions in areas of responsibility and support. Each tends to place often totally unrealistic demands upon the other for security and domestic tranquility.

COMBINATIONS WITH NUMBER FOUR

   4-5—STRESS NUMBER (l). Four and five are like polar opposites, so this combination will undergo considerable strain in accepting the individuality and will of each one involved.

The five can abuse the privilege of freedom and individuality and resents the possessive and plodding four. The four clings stubbornly to habit and custom and becomes annoyed with the five's total disregard for rules and accepted norms of behavior. Their struggle will likely persist: expansive tendencies of five against the restrictive nature of the four. The four works so hard to make things comfortable and cozy, but the five is seldom home to appreciate the work. The five has no tolerance for the confinement imposed by the four. There will be many arguments that flair up intensely and are over quickly. The five can learn patience and discipline from the four, and the four can learn to be more independent and spontaneous from the five.
